The immune system tries to fight off potentially harmful microorganisms, but pathogens can evade these defenses. We’ll take a look at cells of the innate immune system as they battle the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans.

During a visit to our lab, you can see how we use a state-of-the-art live-cell analysis system to study how different cells of our immune system fightthe human pathogenic yeast Candida albicans and the mold Aspergillus fumigatus

We’ll show you how immune cells attack and engulf these pathogens, but also how they sacrifice themselves to contain these threats. We’ll also show you how the pathogens can break free from their constraints and form large structures that make it practically impossible for immune cells to eliminate the fungus—or is it? You’ll also have the opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments yourself. You’ll be able to count the number of viable yeast cells and visualize an important defense mechanism of these remarkable microbes.
