The biobank – custodian of human biological samples for research and science

Biological samples from patients are essential for research into diseases and treatments. The work of modern biobanks is based on this premise: human biological samples are processed under standardised conditions and stored at very low temperatures (–80°C to –150°C), often for long periods. These samples are made available to researchers so that they can investigate questions such as the following: What similarities and differences exist between patients at the cellular and molecular level in relation to specific clinical conditions or specific treatments? What are the reasons for these differences? Which drug therapies are likely to help as many patients as possible?
