In an era of rising antibiotic resistance, the rapid characterization of the bacteria causing the infection is becoming increasingly important. We demonstrate how new optical and spectroscopic methods can contribute to this effort.

Using visual aids, photos, and videos, we demonstrate how bacteria from patient samples are quickly brought into the laser focus, and what information we can glean from the spectrum—the so-called optical fingerprint—of the bacteria. Artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, plays an important role in data analysis.
