Medical imaging techniques are the product of various scientific subdisciplines. The fundamentals of these subdisciplines and their applications are presented through numerous interactive experiments on optics and machine learning.

The Department of Medical Technology and Biotechnology combines innovative technologies and biological systems to improve healthcare. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, we develop new solutions that improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. From the development of biocompatible materials to advanced imaging techniques and the use of artificial intelligence, our research in the department is shaping the future of medicine and biotechnology.

A matchbox game to illustrate artificial intelligence:
Learn the basics of machine learning in a fun and interactive way. Our matchbox game demonstrates how the world’s simplest AI learns and evolves through simple rules and interactions. It offers an entertaining and accessible introduction to the complex world of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Presentation on the basics of color theory:
Dive into the world of colors and discover the fascinating fundamentals of color theory. Learn how colors are created, the role light plays, and how colors are used in various applications. This presentation will deepen your understanding of the significance of colors and light.

Hyperspectral Imaging:
See how hyperspectral imaging works and what fascinating insights it offers. Using gummy bears, we’ll demonstrate the different spectral bands and how this technology is used in medical technology to detect the subtlest differences in materials and tissues. This method opens up new horizons in imaging and diagnostics.

Hands-On Physics Experiments on Refraction:
Become a researcher yourself and conduct small experiments on the refraction of light. Discover how light is refracted in different media and what exciting optical phenomena result. These hands-on experiments offer an interactive way to explore the fundamentals of optics.

Hands-On Endoscopy:
Discover the basics of endoscopic imaging with an interactive demonstrator. Guide an endoscope through a model, locate marked structures, and match the captured images to possible findings. In the process, you’ll gain a vivid understanding of the possibilities—as well as the limitations—of endoscopy due to the restricted field of view, lighting, and maneuverability of the probe.

In addition, we’ll show you two impressive system applications as examples of research practice:

Volumetric (3D) images of blood vessels using optical coherence tomography:
Be fascinated by three-dimensional images of blood vessels created using optical coherence tomography (OCT). This technique provides detailed insights into the structure of blood vessels and enables the identification of plaques, delivering important information for medical diagnostics.

3D Printers in Action:
Watch live as a 3D printer operates and builds complex structures layer by layer. Learn more about the applications of 3D printing in medical technology, from the production of customized implants to biocompatible materials.
