Animal testing in ageing research

At the FLI, research is carried out into the biological basis of ageing. As ageing is a highly complex process that affects not only our body’s cells and organs but the entire organism, many scientific questions can only be investigated using animal models.

The conduct of these animal experiments is strictly regulated by law and requires a multi-stage authorisation process. Researchers are mindful of their responsibility towards the animals at all times. To avoid animal experiments (Replace), to minimise the number of animals used in experiments (Reduce) and to improve animal welfare (Refine), the 3R principle is consistently applied and implemented.
