Using modern UHF radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, items such as clothing and sporting goods on retail store floors, books in libraries, artifacts in museums and archives, and items in warehouses can be tracked wirelessly during inventory counts.
The demonstration features an autonomous mobile robot equipped with UHF RFID reading technology that independently conducts inventory counts of pre-prepared books and clothing items fitted with RFID transponders. The speed of automated inventory counting exceeds that of manual inventory counting by more than a factor of 10. At the same time, the positions of RFID-tagged items are estimated, making it possible to locate books thought to be lost or misplaced garments on the sales floor with an accuracy of just a few 10 cm!
