How are camera systems designed that can capture information from different distances without moving the lens?

How can a camera capture information from different distances without moving the lens? In the HyZone research project, we are developing multifocal optical systems for applications in which objects or structures at different distances are captured simultaneously. Using a demonstrator, we illustrate the process from optical design through precision manufacturing to metrological characterization.

At our booth, you can experience for yourself the difference between a traditional camera lens and a multifocal optical system. Using various recognition examples, we’ll demonstrate the respective strengths and limitations of both approaches. Many people are familiar with a similar principle from multifocal intraocular lenses. However, it is equally suitable for applications in industrial image processing, robotics, and metrology—anywhere where the use of moving focusing systems needs to be avoided. We’d be happy to answer your questions and discuss with you the applications and challenges of multifocal optical systems.
