We are made up of 70% water; plants are even 90% water. Water is absolutely essential to our lives. Water is not only important to us humans, but also to the plants that provide us with food. That is why water is a vital resource we cannot do without.
And water is virtually everywhere in our environment—in the Saale River, in Schleichersee, in the clouds, and coming out of the faucet. But there are also important water pathways that we can’t see, yet which are crucial for replenishing our water reserves. For example, water travels through the air as water vapor when it evaporates. Or it’s right beneath our feet in the groundwater.
Here at the Long Night, we’re recreating the water cycle and, in the process, showing how salt stays in the ocean. We’ll show you why plants need water and how much they release into the atmosphere. We’ll also make clouds in a glass of water and discuss the challenges climate change poses for our forests.
