What lies beneath the surface of an insect, inside a hair or within tiny particles of material? Experience first-hand how a scanning electron microscope reveals fascinating structures that remain hidden from the naked eye.

A journey of discovery with electrons

In small groups, you’ll gain an insight into the work of microstructure analysis at the Leibniz-IPHT. Together with the researchers, you’ll take a peek into the microcosm: live images from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) show, for example, the fine structures of insects, pollen or hair – or surprising details of modern materials right down to the nanometre scale.

But it’s not just the visuals that are fascinating: energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) can be used to analyse which chemical elements are present in a sample. Perhaps you’d even like to bring along a piece of jewellery or a coin of your own to have analysed? Discover how electron microscopy and elemental analysis help us understand materials down to the smallest detail.

Guided tours: 6 .30 pm, 7.30 pm, 8.30 pm, 9.30 pm and 10.30 pm
Group size: maximum 6 people per tour
Meeting point: by the stairs in the foyer at the Leibniz-IPHT
