How can crisis response teams tasked with combating wildfires, earthquakes, floods, or other natural disasters be provided with missing, relevant information about the current situation in a quick and targeted manner? With our methodological developments for digital data collection by humans, we are helping to answer this question: Gaps in the current situational picture are automatically identified, and individuals on-site are specifically tasked with collecting the missing data to fill these gaps. The methods developed for this purpose are implemented as components of the modular mobile application FieldMApp to enable user-centered development. This paper provides insights into the methodological developments and demonstrates their use using FieldMApp as an example.

In doing so, the institute takes a holistic approach across the entire data lifecycle—from data collection and processing to machine learning and the derivation of concrete recommendations for action.
To process large volumes of data and further develop modern AI methods, the institute operates a high-performance HPDA supercomputing cluster, which is also available to collaboration partners and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
In this way, the institute supports the innovative and efficient use of data in science, business, and society. At the same time, it promotes sustainable processes as well as robust and future-proof technologies for the DLR’s diverse fields of application.
