Why do some corals glow? Why do white fabrics appear especially bright? And how do researchers use fluorescence to make the tiniest molecules visible?
At the Fluorescence Lab at Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena, you’ll embark on an interactive journey of discovery through the fascinating world of fluorescence. The exhibition is designed for children, teens, and adults, and brings together nature, everyday life, and modern science.
At three stations that build on one another, you’ll first discover fluorescent animals, plants, and natural substances. Next, you’ll become a fluorescence detective yourself and examine everyday objects such as laundry detergent, paper, or paper money under UV light. In the process, you’ll learn why optical brighteners make textiles appear whiter and why fluorescence is an important component of modern security features.
Finally, you’ll take a look into the world of research. Learn how scientists use fluorescence to make molecules, proteins, and cells visible, and discover the inner workings of a modern fluorometer. Clear demonstrations show how valuable scientific information is obtained from invisible light.
We’ve prepared a “researcher’s map” for our visitors, featuring small missions and puzzles. Those who observe carefully, follow the experiments, and solve the puzzles will become fluorescence researchers themselves.
