"Hello Moon!" We’re reporting on the Artemis lunar mission and the Orion spacecraft using our sensors

Jena is keeping the Orion spacecraft on course!

It has been over half a century since the last humans visited the Moon. Artemis II has changed all that! The crew travelled further from Earth and the Moon than anyone before them.

To ensure they don’t stray off course, technology from Thuringia is on board the Orion spacecraft: the ASTRO APS star sensor from Jena-Optronik.

“Hello Moon!” Talks on NASA’s Artemis mission and how our sensors are guiding the Orion spacecraft safely to the Moon and back to Earth:

  • “On the way to the Moon: Insights into the Artemis mission and our sensors for the Orion spacecraft”
  • “Navigating by the stars: The star sensor for Artemis” with a live demonstration
  • “Rendezvous in space: The LiDAR sensor for Artemis” with a live demonstration

The first talk begins at 6.30 pm, followed by further talks every 45 minutes.

You can also look forward to:

  • Fly to other planets on the Photo Bus
  • Space Bar with space-themed cocktails

Where space technology is developed:

‘Fit for Space – Testing Space Sensors’ and a demonstration of our ‘Shaker’ right in the cleanroom. The first tour starts at 6.45 pm, followed by tours every 45 minutes. Maximum 10 people per group.

‘Manufacturing sensors for space’: An exclusive glimpse into our cleanroom. The first session starts at 6.30 pm, followed by further sessions every 90 minutes. Maximum of 15 people per group.

How space products are made:

Our colleagues will show you how mechanics, optics, electronics and software work together, and you can watch live as space components are created on our 3D milling machine!

From 6.00 pm; all activities take place simultaneously.

Hands-on stations:

Have a go at soldering and make an LED spinning top.

Take a selfie in front of the glowing Supermoon or in the Space Photo Bus.

You can carry out your own experiments and find out, amongst other things, how satellites communicate with one another.

Test your skills: navigate through space yourself.

From 6.00 pm; all activities take place simultaneously.

Space presentations:

History: ‘From Jena to Space’: From the MKF-6 and the first star sensor, ASTRO 1, to our contributions to the exploration of space

‘We know what the Earth breathes’: How Jena supports the Sentinel satellites of the Copernicus programme with optics and electronics, enabling a better understanding of our planet!

From 6.00 pm, with all events taking place simultaneously.
