The lecture takes the audience on a brief journey through the chemistry of glass

A brief foray into the world of glass aims to show how the everyday challenges in glass development, manufacturing, and analysis can be overcome through chemistry, physics, and the experience of glassmakers. After all, we’ve known that glass is something brilliant ever since we began using it. The possibilities for combining nearly all chemical elements in this material—with its strangely disordered structure—are diverse and virtually limitless. Materials with surprising properties for a wide variety of applications are possible because, despite this disorder, the structure is not entirely random.

Speaker: Dr. Thilo Zachau, Head of Analytics, SCHOTT Jena
