A glimpse into the quantum laboratory
Quanta, the ‘enchanted’ particles of light, can communicate with one another in fascinating ways – even over great distances. Researchers at Fraunhofer IOF are utilising the effect known as quantum entanglement to develop a highly secure data network for the future. This would enable sensitive information to be protected and transmitted securely. In medicine, quantum technologies even make it possible to produce microscopic images of samples without the light altering or damaging them.
The O-PEN project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and implemented by the Fraunhofer Institutes ISI and IOF, also brings quantum research to life in a playful way: Visitors are invited to carry out a security test on a real quantum communication system themselves in an interactive game, whilst gaining an understanding of quantum physics.
