In science, experiments are often carried out to test a hypothesis. But in climate and Earth system science, it’s not quite that simple, because, after all, we only have one planet. So how do we know which changes have what impact on the Earth? To answer this, we develop computer models that simulate the key processes of the Earth system, such as the water cycle, the carbon cycle and ocean currents. Find out more about how models help us understand our planet, and try out a climate model for yourself to make predictions about how the Earth’s climate might develop in the future.
You can also find out how we at the MPI for Geoanthropology are working on a new generation of Earth system models in which humans and the Earth can influence one another.
