How can X-ray vision help me with crafting?
In the materials testing laboratory at ifw Jena, welds, steel components and samples from our research work are subjected to radiographic testing. The aim of radiographic testing is to gain an insight into the interior of components. This makes it possible to determine whether there are any voids or defects that could, for example, compromise the strength of a component.
You can see for yourselves just how well this radiographic testing works by examining four selected blocks. From the outside, the blocks look like perfectly ordinary pumpkin lanterns, TNTs, chests or melons. Only an X-ray reveals the secret behind the blocks and shows exactly what is actually inside them.
In our materials testing laboratory, we’re conducting further investigations into the following questions:
- What’s inside my surprise egg?
- How much can a basketball withstand?
- How can you carry out non-destructive testing with a microscope?
