From the Mona Lisa to Monet – How Vision Problems Shaped Famous Paintings

In this lecture, we’ll delve together into the world of brushstrokes and colors and connect two seemingly unrelated fields: the visual arts and optometry. Many great artists, such as da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Monet, have created impressive works of art that have endured for centuries. However, they, too, were only human and were not spared from illness. Cataracts, macular degeneration, and problems with binocular vision are not inventions of our modern age. Centuries ago, they were already altering how people saw and worked. Using famous works of art as examples, we will take a closer look at the effects of eye diseases and bring together art, medicine, and science.
