Three short presentations, each lasting 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion

1. We do more than just protect innovations – but what services does the German Patent and Trade Mark Office actually offer me?

Germany’s economic strength is based largely on innovations and their successful implementation in the market. Intellectual property rights create incentives for investment in research and development and enable companies to exploit technical or creative achievements and attractive trade marks exclusively for commercial purposes. An effective system of industrial property protection is therefore a vital component of a knowledge-based economy.
Start-ups and SMEs also frequently face the challenge of making the right decisions to protect their innovations with limited resources. For young companies in particular, a single intellectual property right can have a significant impact if the quality, timing and strategic integration are right.

In this short presentation, we will show you

how you can protect innovations in a targeted manner,
what intellectual property rights are available,
what requirements need to be taken into account, and
how intellectual property rights can help secure long-term competitive advantages.

Time: 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm

2. Publishing too early is a losing game – fatal missteps on the path to a patent

Patent protection forms the basis for commercialising a technical idea.

This talk will highlight the most common mistakes that researchers with an innovative idea can make on the path to a patent.

In particular, it will explain how, when and why these mistakes prevent the idea from being patented during the examination process.

Time: 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm

3rd talk on trade mark and design protection:

Why should I protect my trade mark and design?

(Business) ideas and concepts need a memorable name/sign and/or a design in order to

distinguish themselves from the competition,
be recognised by customers,
embody a company’s ‘reputation’ or ‘goodwill’,
reflect and build on the company’s value, and
be able to protect themselves against imitation both at home and abroad.

Time: 8.00 pm and 10.00 pm
