Biopharmaceuticals are complex active substances produced using living cells. These include, for example, monoclonal antibodies, viruses and cells. They can enable new or improved therapies – such as personalised treatments, innovative vaccines or therapies with fewer side effects.

The development of such medicines is challenging and time-consuming. It often takes more than ten years from the initial discovery to regulatory approval. Only around one in 10,000 drug candidates reaches the market, and the development costs for a successful medicine average over two billion euros.

The development process comprises many steps: from active substance and cell line development, through manufacturing and quality control, to validation and regulatory approval. Sartorius supports researchers in this endeavour with bioanalytical instruments, cell models, laboratory equipment and solutions for the analysis and characterisation of cells and proteins. This enables drug candidates to be identified more quickly and medicines to be developed more efficiently.
