We encounter precision manufacturing every day, for example in watches and modern optical systems. However, the complexity of these components also requires the development and application of modern, CNC-controlled machining processes. In our presentation at the Long Night of Science, you’ll gain exciting insights into the world of 5-axis CNC machining and learn about the individual steps of a modern manufacturing process. Live demonstrations will show how complex free-form optical surfaces—which place the highest demands on machines, tools, and processes—are manufactured. This involves the use of modern, ultrasonic-assisted machining machines that open up new possibilities, particularly when machining challenging materials such as glass and ceramics. In our laboratories, you can also see how ceramic-printed watches are given their final shape through precise post-processing.
The state-of-the-art machines from DMG MORI are used and further developed as part of joint research projects with the university focused on innovative manufacturing and machining processes. To this end, the Ultrasonic Competence Center was jointly opened at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena in November 2025.
