Drug delivery: Molecular taxis for more effective treatments
Traditional therapeutic approaches are like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The active ingredient is distributed throughout the body, meaning that higher doses are required for the treatment to be successful and that undesirable side effects may occur. Particularly when treating fungal infections, we face the additional problem that there are very few classes of active substances available for their treatment, and we are increasingly confronted with fungi that are resistant to these medicines.
During a visit to our laboratory, we’ll show you how we’re tackling this problem to release the active ingredients specifically at the site of action. In this way, we can, on the one hand, increase the efficacy of the treatment and, on the other, reduce the dose and, consequently, the side effects. You’ll also have the chance to carry out practical experiments here in our laboratory. In doing so, you’ll learn how we achieve the release of active ingredients, investigate targeted delivery using complex cell culture models, and discover the impact of nebulisers in pulmonary applications.
