Around 10,000 seriously ill people in Germany are waiting for a donor organ. The University Hospital is one of 45 centres across the country where life-saving transplant operations can be carried out – provided a suitable organ is available. During the Long Night of Science, we aim to answer the most important questions on the topics of organ donation and transplant medicine through a series of short presentations:
- How is it ensured that an organ is only removed after the ‘irreversible failure of all brain functions’?
Find out how an interdisciplinary medical team determines brain death - How does the donor organ reach the recipient?
Find out how the German Organ Transplantation Foundation coordinates organ donation in Germany - How does the transplant procedure work?
Find out how surgical teams perform heart or liver transplants in operations lasting several hours - How healthy are recipients after the operation?
Find out more about post-operative care and life with a donor organ
Following the presentations, the speakers will be available for one-to-one discussions and to answer any questions you may have.
