Pioneering work – A company answers the call of a rare toad
Göschwitz not only brings high-tech companies to the fore, but also pioneer species threatened with extinction that colonise open and unvegetated sites. The last natterjack toads (Epidalea calamita) in Jena found a place to spawn in a shallow puddle on the grounds of Sartorius AG.
‘Simplifying Progress’ – true to the company’s motto, the dedicated efforts of all those involved (from staff and authorities to the Natura 2000 site ‘Auen, Moore, Feuchtgebiete’) led to the rapid development of solutions integrated into the business operations to ensure successful coexistence.
In short presentations at 6.30 pm, 7.30 pm, 8.30 pm, 9.30 pm and 10.30 pm, the Jena Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the Natura 2000 station ‘Auen, Moore, Wetlands’ will present so-called ‘stepping-stone biotopes’, which are designed to help preserve biodiversity in the heart of an industrial estate, are easy to maintain, and offer species dependent on floodplain dynamics a much-needed last chance of survival.
