What exactly does a science workshop do? Watch as aluminum cubes are created live on a CNC milling machine, assemble your own mini Christmas tree circuit board, and take a look at the engraving laser in action.

In the scientific workshops of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, individual parts and devices for research and teaching are manufactured. For the Long Night of Science, the mechanics workshop will produce aluminum dice with an edge length of 18 mm on a CNC milling machine. During ongoing demonstrations, these will be created in two steps and given away primarily to children (this is very popular with kids). Visitors will be introduced to basic tools, materials, and processes. At the same time, we’d also like to promote the opportunities for vocational training at the university. The training instructor for the science workshops will be on site to answer questions and explain the available opportunities. 
In the electronics workshop one floor up, the Christmas spirit is in the air: During the hands-on “Christmas Tree” project, colleagues from the electronics workshop will demonstrate how electronic components are manufactured. Visitors will assemble a pre-prepared circuit board in the shape of a small Christmas tree according to their own preferences and watch as the circuit board is then soldered in the reflow oven. Afterward, we’ll demonstrate how to process materials using our engraving laser. As an example, we’ll cut out and engrave small wooden Christmas figures. 
We’ll also demonstrate electronic devices we’ve developed and manufactured in action using a test setup.
