What lies behind gender stereotypes and how are they exploited? At the Science Slam, early-career researchers engage the audience with their research topics.

Come and witness a phenomenal competition in the Arena of Knowledge. At this year’s Science Slam, researchers will present fascinating topics in entertaining 5-minute talks. With creativity and a good dose of humour, research questions will be explained in a way that is easy to understand for young and old alike. The topics range from psychology to linguistics, and we’ll be exploring whether there’s a scientific basis for gender stereotypes in advertising, the workplace and the perception of emotions. From baffling everyday phenomena to surprising experiments: our scientists are set to blow you away! At the end, the guest jury will decide who comes out on top and gets to take home the trophy for the best presentation. So if you’ve always wondered whether there’s a scientific basis for why your husband just doesn’t get it, come along and let the answers surprise you!

Speakers:

KAROLINE SCHUBERT, Chair of Work and Organisational Psychology:

Well, actually… The consequences of mansplaining in the workplace

Mansplaining – a harmless cliché or a genuine problem after all? I’ll take you through a study that examines the extent to which gender and hierarchy can influence the perception of condescending explanations, and why it’s not just those affected who are of interest, but also those who engage in mansplaining.

INKE HENNEBERGER, Department of Speech Science and Sociophonetics, Chair of German Linguistics:

Frequency & Prejudice – Gender Stereotypes in Advertising Voice Research

Inka’s research focuses on the gender-specific nature and perception of advertising voices. Gender roles have clearly diversified both in society as a whole and in advertising – but is this also evident to the ear? How much – or how little – cliché is there in advertising voices? Let’s find out!

JULIA FREITAG, Chair of Developmental Psychology:

A glance speaks louder than a thousand words – but who understands it?

‘Women read emotions between the lines’, ‘Men need things spelled out when it comes to emotions’ – we’re all familiar with clichés like these. But do women really understand subtle emotional signals better than men? As a psychologist, I’m getting to the bottom of this question and taking a closer look: what does the science say?
