The booth will feature a specially developed laser setup that simulates radiation effects on microchips. In addition, exposed chips can be viewed under a microscope.

Cosmic radiation consists of high-energy particles that originate primarily from the Sun, but also from distant events such as supernovae. It poses a major challenge, particularly in spaceflight, as it can affect, damage, or—in the worst case—destroy electronic components. Such radiation effects can be specifically simulated and studied not only with particle accelerators but also with lasers.

The demonstration features a laser setup developed over several years that uses a DVD burner as its laser head. Using this system, various integrated circuits are selectively irradiated with laser light to induce radiation-like effects, which are then detected. To allow the laser to reach the sensitive structures inside, the components’ casings must first be removed or etched away. Such exposed integrated circuits can also be viewed under a microscope at the booth. This gives visitors a vivid insight into the structure of modern microchips and the investigation of their sensitivity to radiation effects.
