Where does the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere come from? What information can we glean from analysing the stable isotope ratios in the air? Heiko Moossen answers these questions and gives you a glimpse into a modern laboratory.

Our researchers collect air, soil and plant samples during numerous field trips and at fixed research sites. These samples are then processed and analysed at the institute. To track the fate of greenhouse-relevant trace gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, we need to determine the composition of their isotopes in the air and how these change. We use mass spectrometry for this purpose. You can find out all about isotopes, how they are measured and what they reveal about the origin of carbon dioxide during a visit to our Stable Isotope Laboratory.
