Biological and social factors influence the way we speak. Find out about the research into the link between hormones, social influences and vocal differences between men and women.

Women’s and men’s voices differ due to biological differences in the vocal tract. In addition to anatomical factors (such as the size of the larynx), there are also hormonal differences between the biological sexes. What role do the sex hormones testosterone and oestradiol play in the voice? And why are biological factors alone insufficient to explain the differences in voice and speech between women and men?
